We have had a super start to the school year here at Wheelock! The boys and girls are fantastic and we are looking forward to a wonderful year. Here are a couple of short slideshows. Enjoy!
Our teachers were very busy during our first two professional days. Grade 3 is beginning a new word study/spelling program - Words Their Way. This program was selected by a committee of teachers and administrators and suits the needs of our students.
As we strive to create consistency among our elementary schools, Wheelock will be transitioning to the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment that is used at Dale Street School. We started the transition with grade 2 at Wheelock. Since our grade 3 teachers are getting a new word study/spelling program, we delayed the grade 3 adoption until the 2018-2019 school year. The Benchmark Assessment is a bit more flexible and better meets our needs than the current DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) which is another reliable and popular reading assessment tool. We are excited to get started!
Our elementary teachers also got the opportunity to experience professional development in the use of our Foss Science kits. Teachers will be using the kits for one or two of their Next Generation Science topics this year. I know the students in our pilot teachers' classrooms really enjoyed those experiences last year. More excitement!
On Wednesday we gathered as a school family in the afternoon. Students got the opportunity to meet the teachers and staff and enjoy a story entitled Courage by Bernard Waber- we encourage risk-taking at Wheelock!
This year our Hoots program will expand to whole classes earning hoots. The teachers will utilize those rewards through their own classroom incentive programs. Hoots may also be given in the cafeteria to encourage appropriate behavior.
I hope you have a great Labor Day weekend!
Enjoy! It's great to be back,
