Dear Wheelock Families,
This week I am writing to tell you about another of our efforts around social emotional well-being at Wheelock School. We will be among thousands of schools participating next week in several aspects of the Great Kindness Challenge.
The goal of the Great Kindness Challenge is to instill in our students that "kindness matters". The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible on campus. Using the provided checklist of 50 kind acts, students accept the challenge and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!
Our students are very important to us and their well-being is at the top of our list. Your students came to us from Memorial where they instilled the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated. We believe in the same message.
We all realize that as children grow up, they make mistakes. I have said many times, it is our job to help our students learn from mistakes and make better choices. However, unkind or hurtful words cannot be tolerated in our schools. We are building a community where students show respect to teachers, staff and each other. Please join us next week and always as we educate the whole child. Teaching students to be kind is a most important life lesson.
I met with all classes at lunch today to get them psyched for our week. We have three Spirit Days next week! On the 30th, we wear Red to recognize Heart month. On the 31st we are having a Peace Day. Students may dress reflecting peace and love. On Friday, we end the week sending kind thoughts to our favorite sports team with a Football Spirit Day. Teachers are asked to hold Open Circle meetings focused on kindness. At recess we will have a Kindness Station where students can write notes, make cards or kindness posters. The children seem very excited and I hope the message sticks: Be kind!
Along these lines, we have a lot to look forward to at Wheelock School. In collaboration with the PTO, we will hold another walk in the spring for a charitable purpose. We also will continue the Kindness Rocks Project with grade 2.
In addition to our curricular responsibilities, we have a lot of great activities for our students regularly. Together, we strive to provide a balanced education for the whole child!
On another note, a reminder to grade 2 parents: If you are making no change to your student's world language for the 2019-2020 school year, please DO NOT complete the form you received today via email. Thank you!!
Have a nice weekend,
